Introduction:
Gender socialization plays a big role in our personalities. In several studies, I have found that boys are socialized to become aggressive adults. On the other hand, the socialization girls receive cause them to become passive women. (Cartwright, 1999) The socialization that causes these different behavior techniques begins in infancy and continues on throughout life. Parents, peers, and the media affect drastically the behaviors we learn. I will show you evidence from studying a group of fourth graders that proves the passive/aggressive behaviors are present.
Body:
In this paper, I address the problem of socializing boys and girls differently. I will examine how gender socialization causes boys to act as aggressors; while girls are continually more passive.
Conclusion:
My research shows that the different socialization of boys and girls leads to different and unequal access to opportunities later in life. Steps should therefore be taken to ensure that this kind of socialization is modified so that girls and boys are given the opportunity to fully develop as people, not necessarily as Males or Females. In changing the socialization process, we as a society should decrease emphasis on the media perspective and how peers see one, and place the emphasis on one’s personal characteristics.
